We recently had the opportunity to attend a seminar on Hybrid and Remote Working hosted by Dr. Darja Šmite, Professor of Software Engineering at Blekinge Institute of Technology. The session provided valuable insights into the evolving workplace landscape and how businesses can adapt to new work norms.
In today’s world, remote and hybrid work have become the standard, leaving many companies struggling to define the true role of the office. Dr. Smite’s research highlights both the benefits and challenges of remote work—and what it means for the future of the workplace.

What we learned:

• Many employees feel more productive at home, free from office distractions.
• Remote work, while convenient, can slow knowledge transfer, isolate new hires, and weaken company culture.
• Lack of spontaneous collaboration may impact innovation and teamwork.
• Some companies are reintroducing mandatory office days, while others fully embrace remote work.
• Forcing employees back often leads to dissatisfaction. Instead, businesses should focus on making offices attractive and meaningful.
